Interactive Crash Course on Reading Financial Statements for Non-Financials: Why is this also interesting for you?

Commissioners with a financial background are usually part of the Audit Committee. It’s tempting to leave the entire financial statement topic to them. However, the board as a whole is, of course, responsible for financial oversight. Many non-financials need more knowledge and understanding of “the numbers.” For them, Hemingway organizes a crash course.

This crash course is presented in an engaging and interactive way by Joost de Vries, an experienced lecturer at institutions such as VU and UvA, and co-author of the book Corporate Finance for Lawyers.

He developed the Financial Mindmap and uses moving blocks and color to demonstrate how abstract concepts like the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow work. For each block of the Financial Mindmap that he explains, he uses storytelling and case studies. Behind the numbers, there are stories. This way, you experience the position of different stakeholders and ultimately uncover the story behind the numbers by analyzing a financial statement.

Your Takeaways

  • With one simple image, you learn how the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow are interconnected.
  • Abstract concepts such as solvency, liquidity, and working capital are easy to understand with the Financial Mindmap.
  • You can see which stakeholders are behind the different blocks and which ratios they use to assess a company.
